New technology has revolutionised the way that the world and its inhabitants communicate. A war in the middle east and a tsunami in east asia can be broadcast around the world before the established media have even unpacked their cameras and microphones.
The monopoly of the media by a handful of experts has been superceded by a ‘citizen networking’ on a scale that was simply not possible in the 20th century.
This new revolution in ‘citizen media’ offers fantastic opportunities for VCFS (voluntary, community and faith sector) organisations to engage with new audiences. This sub-web of Blackpool Community News Interactive has been established to to promote and discuss these opportunities and to try and make sure that Blackpool gains and benefits from this revolution.
As one of the attached documents explains:
“In many ways there is nothing new about this media. It’s as old as humanity itself because it’s about storytelling, chatting and connecting with people. It just happens to work via a computer, keyboard and screen. This book (these materials!) will show you that the technologies are now accessible, easy and free. You can concentrate on using them to do what you do anyway – having conversations, forming relationships and telling stories.”
The ICT & Communications Working Group of the Lancashire VCFS Consortium was established in 2004 to promote good practice in the region. They have produced a CD-ROM to highlight the material and documents that are available to guide and inspire such practice. Blackpool SURF is pleased to provide those materials for download and wider circulation in the town.
The document are all PDF documents (Portable Document Files). So… with thanks to the Working Group….
